General Care Guidelines for Newly Seeded Lawns:
General Care Guidelines for Newly Seeded Lawns:
Watering:
Water is a very important factor for the germination of the seeds. On your first watering saturate the area completely and then water three to four times daily to keep the first 1/4-1/2” of the soil wet at all times to achieve good germination. The amount of times you water and the amount of water you apply will depend greatly on the weather conditions. Within 5-12 days you will see the first small leaves of the new plants, if planting procedures have been followed and completed to instruction.
Fertilization:
It is recommended to apply a starter fertilizer upon seed installation to provide well rounded nutrients for quicker establishment and healthier new grass. If seeding in the spring, use a SEED/SOD starter fertilizer with “Tupersan”. This is a special product that prevents crabgrass in the seeded area, without preventing your grass seed from germinating.
Note: Do not use a standard pre-emergent at the time of seeding, it will prevent your grass seed from germinating.
Mowing:
When there is a need for mowing, mow the lawn at normal mowing height. By collecting the clippings in the first month it will give the new plants more space to grow.
Note: We recommended trying to stay off your newly seeded lawn until it has established.
Your lawn should become established in approximately 4 to 6 weeks!!
Once your new lawn has become established, please follow information below!!
General Care Guidelines
for Established Lawns:
Mowing:
The settings below are appropriate in the spring and fall. In June, July and August, raise the mowing height one inch to cool the turf plant and reduce stress, except buffalograss which can remain at the low mowing height.
Fertilization:
In early spring a combination product that contains pre-emergent weed control should be applied to prevent weeds from emerging in your yard. Three more fertilization applications are recommended throughout the rest of the year. Be sure to follow label directions. Please follow chart below for approximate dates for applying fertilizer.

Watering:
The best time to water is early morning, so less water is lost by evaporation. The worst time to water is in the evening because the lawn stays wet all night, which encourages disease development. Lawns watered too frequently tend to develop shallow root systems which may make them more susceptible to grub damage and heat/drought stress. Note: Additional watering may be needed during hot, dry summers.
